More Math with Supriya
Supriya got up in the morning, had her cup of milk, sat down on the couch with a paper-pad and a pen and was writing down stuff for a while. A little while later she showed me what she wrote. It was a page full of equations as follows:
"51 - 51 = 0
41 - 41 = 0
31 - 31 = 0
21 - 21 = 0
11 - 11 = 0
10 - 10 = 0
9 - 9 = 0
8 - 8 = 0
7 - 7 = 0
6 - 6 = 0
5 - 5 = 0
4 - 4 = 0
3 - 3 = 0
2 - 2 = 0
1 - 1 = 0"
Her triumphant expression showed me the sense of mastery she felt writing down all these equations that result in 0, as if to say, "I am so powerful, I can cut any number down to size!"
I wanted to build on that sense of mastery and gave her an oral problem, "Instead of 5 minus 5 equals 0, if we want 5 minus Something equals 1, what is that Something?" "4," came the answer right back. (Pretty soon I will start saying X instead of Something and see if she can handle it.)
"7?" "6."
"15" "14."
"45?" "44!"
"95?" "94!"
Supriya has built a strong intuitive foundation for her math with very little input from us, in true unschooling fashion.
